How to Style Your Home – Charleston Garden Mural and our new Designer Pillows

June 17, 2022

Today is all about what to put with a mural.

We have this Charleston Garden mural right here and we love it. It’s a classic! It’s elegant and it looks fantastic with modern furniture or even traditional.

So, if you want to put a little pillow or accent pillow on a chair in a foyer, you can match this mural with something like our Zambia-taupe pillow. It works if you want to add a neutral pattern but with more modern geometric look. Creates a more neutral approach to the mix.

Of course, I like to use something with more color like our Pink Kate pillow. It’s transitional and is elegant and creates more of an eclectic transitional look to the feel of the room. Brightens up the space and updates a classic by making the room more eclectic while brings out the pinks and the rose colors in the mural.

Now, if you don’t want the pink pillow- you could use just the Zambia-in-Aquas. It brings out the lovely blues in the mural and is more striking visually.

The tip when you’re picking pillows is just picking a color from the mural that you love, it’ll bring it all together. I even like the Julia here because it’s got the blues, greens and the pinks in bold colors. This would look great on a bench or loveseat in front of this mural.

Looking to purchase our new designer pillows. We now have them available on Etsy, and coming soon to our new website.

Chinoiserie design a history of the pattern and design tips

Today I want to talk to you about the history of Chinoiserie design. Did you know that Chinoiserie is a French word?

History of the Design

“Chinois” means Chinese. The whole design trend of Chinoiserie came from the Westerner’s who were fascinated by how people lived in India and in Asia in the 17th century.

When products came to Europe and America through the British East India Trading Company. Products like tea, panels and screens and porcelain. The panels would be either wood or glass and they would have these designs on them.

Screens made out of many panels were very important to use in their homes. They used them around fireplaces to keep the heat in or use them to separate a large room into another space. They were very popular.

These screens started to show up in several paintings of women lounging, drinking tea in front of the decorated screens.

Motifs in Chinoiserie

A lot of the motifs in a Chinoiserie pattern would include landscapes, birds, trees and flowers. As porcelain was starting to gain popularity for tea sets, they started to put the tea rose in the Chinoiserie patterns. In my Chinoiserie mural, I have encorporated a tea rose into the mural as well.

The more popular tea became, when the tea came across with the traders, they placed it in these ceramic tins. There were paintings on them, and inside each container had tins with black tea, green tea, and sugar.

As the popularity of tea spread to France. French became a major design influence in Chinoiserie. One of the first designed interiors was a room at the Palais de Versailles.

Chinoiserie Design Tips

This pattern is a classic and it goes with any type of furniture. Chinoiserie looks great with modern, traditional, or even farmhouse chic or boho style.

It is like the outside has come in. This is a very open pattern with the birds, and some lemons to make it fun! Don’t forget the tea roses too.

Our Chinoiserie mural looks great in a hallway, a dining room, or even a feature wall in a bedroom. You can pull out any of the colors in it to decorate around it

The Chinoiserie Blossom Mural is from the Anthology Resource Collection and is available in green, blue, and silver grasscloth.

The lemons from this mural have also inspired my Lemon Tote Bag and Wristlet, now available on Etsy

Design Tips for Hanging a Wallpaper Mural

Murals aren’t as hard as they seem. It’s a simple yet impactful way to add spice to any room. I’ve got few tips to share with you on how to hang a mural, so you can hang them easily!

#1 Select a Frame

Choose a  centerpiece of the mural that you want to become the focal point for your wall. The design you choose should be in the middle of the wall. This technique allows you to gauge how it would flow along the rest of your wall.

#2 Ceiling Height

Know that you can still use murals even if your ceiling isn’t high. In fact, in this video, we worked with a 7-and-a-half foot tall wall height. You can trim from the bottom and top of most murals which is the best way to make them smaller in height. This way, you still have a little base at the bottom of the mural.

#3. Repeat the Pattern

What’s great about the murals from daisybennettdesigns.com is that they are designed in repeat. This means you can use more than one one mural and or use many to have a continuous flow around a room. It’s great for dining rooms, entranceways and bedrooms. foyers, or created in a repeated pattern that allows it to flow continuously on the wall.

#4 Pre-Measure and Pre-Layout

Always pre-layout the design and pre measure your walls so you know you have ordered enough mural to hang in your room. You want to be sure exactly where you want to put it to avoid mistakes. So lay the mural out first on the floor to make sure it is printed correctly and so you can see where you will start hanging your mural in your space.

Final Thoughts
