Tips to Accessorize Your Home With Novelty Wallpaper

December 10, 2021

This week I want to talk to you about some decorating ideas and tips to accessorize your home when using a novelty print wallpaper.

I love birds and one of my favorite wallpaper patterns is our Audubon from the Anthology Collection. It is a fun novelty print with the birds in the birdcage. It would look amazing as an accent wall in a living room.

Blush Audubon Wallpaper
Audubon Wallpaper

What to put with Novelty Prints?

With our new pillow designs is it easy to accessorize this pattern. Audubon has great golds, oranges and blues.

And I just love our new Moderno pillow in red as the perfect accent.

This pillow was inspired by a modern art painting, the shades of blush, reds and golds all compliment the wallpaper tones which also have blush, golds and reds in the birds and bird cages.

Try it on a gold couch, white or green couch. It certainly will add a pop of color and bring out the colors in the wallpaper.

I love sharing tips on styling your home with pattern, check out this weeks video of the new pillow design, Moderno with my Audubon wallpaper. Enjoy these tips to accessorize your home:

You can choose which colorway of Audubon you prefer and contact us for where to purchase.

The Moderno pillow is available, comment below or contact us for details.

Have fun with your decorating.

Be Happy in your home by adding colorful pillows that will make you smile.

Cheers!

How to Create a Modern Traditional Decor

December 3, 2021

How do you update a traditional look to be more modern? It’s easy! With these decor tips, you can create a modern traditional look with pillows and accessories.

First, pick a traditional pattern that you love

I love botanicals and birds so today, in this video, I am showing the new large scale magnolia pillow fabric.

Then mix in some contemporary prints with it. Pick colors from the pillow to make the other coordinates flow.

Here I have a contemporary pillow designed from an art piece, it brings out the reds and oranges in the master pillow and is a great backdrop of color to the botanical print.

Another good pattern to put with traditional prints are geometrics. Here we chose Zambia, a bold black and white tribal geometric which makes the traditional print pop.

Another idea is to mix in a small print in similar colors to the botanical pillow. We chose this Catwalk pattern in green.

Catwalk in Green

It is textural, and highlights the various greens in the floral pillow. The white background is a great contrast to the botanical pillow.

Using different size pillows helps create a visual flow. The Zambia and Catwalk prints are lumbar pillows, which are long and rectangular 14” x 20” so they are a nice contrast sitting in front of the square botanical pillow.

So remember, to create a modern traditional decor style in your home, you need to add texture, with some accents of geometric patterns and smaller prints for a pop of color. An easy way to update your style in decorating.

My New Pillow Designs are coming soon, stay tuned. In the meantime, if you are looking for more design inspiration, follow us on Instagram and Pinterest.

Ocean Trends in Interior Design for 2022

October 29, 2021

Ocean Trends in 2022 – 2021 is coming to a close and we’re nearing the start of 2022!
And with the new year, comes a new trend.

The new forecast trend for 2022, what do you think that is? The ocean of course!

Everything is all about blue. From aqua, light blues to deeper hues, we’re all about sea life and the colors from the ocean to the sky.

Ocean Trends

Blue will be continuing to trend forward and another trend is shells.

I forecast shells coming back into fashion on fashion as well as home furnishings.  Shells are classic motifs, which have been popular since ancient times and have returned back into style.

Often found carved into architectural columns and buildings from ancient times but today they are slowly making a comeback in high fashion in 2022.

You can have a beautiful shell fabric or wallpaper that will infuse the feeling of a coastal home even if you don’t live on or near a beach. Coastal themes like shells can create a feeling of calm and peacefulness.

Used in famous historic paintings like Botticelli’s Birth of Venus painting, depicts Venus floating at shore on a beautiful large shell.

botticelli's birth of venus painting

Even then, since the 1480’s shells were depicted in art, tapestries and architecture.

Shells tend to conjure up memories of beautiful beaches and oceans that surround all of us around the world.

Shells and other ocean elements will also be a trend that I’ll be incorporating into my wallpaper and pillow designs coming out in 2022.

Water and the sky are important influences in design.

If you want a fresh look and feel, we have various fresh blues and aqua’s all influenced by ocean blues and the sky.

Design Chic with Chinoiserie | History of the Design

Chinoiserie design a history of the pattern and design tips

Today I want to talk to you about the history of Chinoiserie design. Did you know that Chinoiserie is a French word?

History of the Design

“Chinois” means Chinese. The whole design trend of Chinoiserie came from the Westerner’s who were fascinated by how people lived in India and in Asia in the 17th century.

When products came to Europe and America through the British East India Trading Company. Products like tea, panels and screens and porcelain. The panels would be either wood or glass and they would have these designs on them.

Screens made out of many panels were very important to use in their homes. They used them around fireplaces to keep the heat in or use them to separate a large room into another space. They were very popular.

These screens started to show up in several paintings of women lounging, drinking tea in front of the decorated screens.

Motifs in Chinoiserie

A lot of the motifs in a Chinoiserie pattern would include landscapes, birds, trees and flowers. As porcelain was starting to gain popularity for tea sets, they started to put the tea rose in the Chinoiserie patterns. In my Chinoiserie mural, I have encorporated a tea rose into the mural as well.

The more popular tea became, when the tea came across with the traders, they placed it in these ceramic tins. There were paintings on them, and inside each container had tins with black tea, green tea, and sugar.

As the popularity of tea spread to France. French became a major design influence in Chinoiserie. One of the first designed interiors was a room at the Palais de Versailles.

Chinoiserie Design Tips

This pattern is a classic and it goes with any type of furniture. Chinoiserie looks great with modern, traditional, or even farmhouse chic or boho style.

It is like the outside has come in. This is a very open pattern with the birds, and some lemons to make it fun! Don’t forget the tea roses too.

Our Chinoiserie mural looks great in a hallway, a dining room, or even a feature wall in a bedroom. You can pull out any of the colors in it to decorate around it

The Chinoiserie Blossom Mural is from the Anthology Resource Collection and is available in green, blue, and silver grasscloth.

The lemons from this mural have also inspired my Lemon Tote Bag and Wristlet, now available on Etsy

Make a Statement with Bold Wallpaper Prints

September 24, 2021

Why live small? Go big and go home! Make a statement in your life and your home with bold prints.
People use to think you can only hang small wallpaper prints in small rooms but that is a complete decorating fallacy.
Big and bold wallpaper prints in small rooms make the room feel larger.

Bold Wallpaper Prints in a Small Bathroom

Like in this powder room, we have a 36” rotary screen banana leaf print and it totally makes the room. It constantly gets noticed and people love it!

This print brings in a lot of color and it’s very dramatic. We have accented it with beadboard on the walls. It compliments nicely with the hallway wallpaper in a navy grass cloth from our Grasscloth Collection. So, it’s a nice entry texture into this hall bathroon.

We have decorated the bathroom with navy towels, and would look nice with green towels as well.

You don’t have to live in the South to bring the tropics into your lifestyle. Leaves are always a great pattern to use as a bold wallpaper print, as you are bringing the outdoors into your home.

So go big! Go Bold! Try some bigger design prints in your home or office space, you might must be surprised with the happiness you feel.

Design Trends for 2022

design trends for 2022

What are some of the color and home design trends for 2022?

We are seeing some pastels making their way into the color field in home decor. One of the most popular right now is this lighter green. A soft minty, celery-sage infused green making its way into home fashion. It is a beautiful color.

It is a natural progression as emerald green is so popular in design. We see lots of emerald green chairs, couches and pillows at the moment in designer interiors.

What is nice about this lighter celadon green is that it goes easily with emerald green. You can mix various greens with your existing furniture or décor. Nature is having a huge influence on pattern design as well and not only in color.

milano wallpaper pattern in
Milano – in seamint, from the Anthology Resource Collection

Granite, continues to be popular and we see it moving into lighting, mirrors and home accessories for 2022. You can never go wrong with a natural inspired trend like granite. We have our own granite inspired wallpaper “Milano” which does come in this new softer minty green which is blended with gold metallic, silver, grey and beiges so its an easy pattern to mix with other colors. Love the curvilinear shape of this wallpaper as it flows so nicely and is organic in feel. Green is known for being the color of communication. A lovely color to have in your home as it has calming and relaxing attributes.

Another popular trend we see are curvilinear shapes. Rounder shapes in furniture and home products are going to be more prevalent in home fashion in 2022. Curved chairs, curved couches and curved lines in modern design patterns like in our new “Lines” pillows coming out this fall, are all about softer, rounder lines and shapes to live with.

This trend reflects how natures organic influence is really starting to shape in products for home design. The wallpaper reflects the organic influence in design, with rounder shapes and more curvilinear lines. Easy to live with because it flows naturally and visually.

If you want a modern pattern inside your home, this one is the perfect match for you. Check it out on daisybennettdesigns.com in the Anthology Resource Collection. Pattern is Milano.

Chinoiserie Wallpaper, French Royalty influences Design History

Chinoiserie: A Look at Its Fascinating History

Inspired by Chinese principles and art, Chinoiserie is a beautiful decorating style that combines Asian culture and Western décor. This style of design is romantic, historical and timeless.

Chinoiserie has a long history. Dating back to the 17th century, Chinoiserie has transformed throughout the generations. A mixture of East and West filled with tranquil imagery and romantic details, this timeless design theme has a beautiful, ornate look.

First appearing in the 17th century, the Chinoiserie Chic trend was popularized in the 18th century due to the rise in trade with China and the rest of East Asia. ‘Chinoiserie’ is actually a French word, while ‘Chinois’ means Chinese.

Charleston Garden Mural from Woodlands Collection

This whole design trend of chinoiserie came from the interest of Westerners who were just so fascinated by the lives and how people lived over in India, and Asia, in the 17th century.  What made them even more fascinated were products that came to Europe and America through the British East India Trading Company. What came across was a lot of tea,  screens, room panels, art and porcelain. On the panels – which were wooden and some were carved  and glass – they would have beautiful designs painted onto them. Back in those days, screens were very important in home décor as they had a multitude of purposes. Screens often had several panels put together as they were used to keep the heat in a room by a fire, used as room dividers, used for dressing areas and also as decorative panels like art in palaces and homes.

Due to Chinoiserie popularity in design, these decorative panels also ended up in paintings – British, French, Viennese  and European paintings. The European paintings liked to feature women lounging and drinking tea. Often, these screens and panels would be painted behind them and would have images of birds and nature to suit the imagery. A Chinoiserie pattern may also include some landscapes, people resting, and of course, drinking tea by the river. They would also have mountains, birds, trees, animals and flowers as well. When porcelain was evolving, they started putting the tea rose into the Chinoiserie patterns and often Chinoiserie became known for having tea roses and peonies in the branching tree like designs and landscapes.

In the 18th century, people’s fascination with tea drinking also further contributed to Chinoiserie’s popularity. Tea became very popular with the women in Britain, and eventually in France. Often these scenic landscapes with novelty images were painted on Tea Canisters which were often locked as sugar was so expensive and always kept with the tea. These scenic landscapes were now on porcelain, art, screens and on walls in the royal palaces.

Blossom Chinoiserie Mural

France became one of the most significant design influences in Chinoiserie decoration! Famous interior designer Louis le Vau interior designed one of the large palace rooms at the Palace of  Versaille. The French loved exuberant decor and were instrumental in moving window treatments, fabrics and this Chinoiserie look forward in the world of interior design.

This designer, Louis Le Vau designed royal rooms in the palace with these huge Chinoiserie painted panels. He was one of the first interior designers to use the Chinoiserie Landscape motif paintings for interiors. A trend started for this Chinoiserie style.  The rich and royalty had a huge influence on design from fashion to home interiors. The French gave special favor to Chinoiserie as it blended well with the Rococo style. The Rococo Style of decorating was very ornate which featured a lot of gold frames, gold accessories etc. The walls in the palace had  all these ornate gold frames on the walls painted  inside with  beautiful Chinoiserie landscapes. These landscapes included people sitting by rivers, mountains, tea roses, peonies, branching trees, animals and anything Far Eastern that was thought to be ‘exotic’.

This started the Chinoiserie trend for  interior decoration in France. That was the first royal Chinoiserie interior designed room at the Palace of Versailles. Hence, a trend started that expanded across Europe, England and over to America.

Today, Chinoiserie is still a heavily used design trend because its fanciful scenery, playful flourishes, and timeless look contribute to a charming decorative aesthetic.
